Bill SheadsDelbert (Bill) Sheads was born in September 1923 in Burke, worked for his father’s saw milling business, and joined the Fairfax Volunteer Fire Department as a teenager, when he helped fight the massive wildfire that raged in Burke for a week in 1941.  During World War II he served with the 113th Armored Cavalry Reconnaissance Regiment in France, Belgium, and Germany, and married his high-school sweetheart Dorris Hollis while briefly home on leave in 1943.  After the war, Bill became chief forester for Fairfax County, served as chief of the Fairfax VFD, and in 1951 began a 35-year career with the Virginia Forestry Service.  Bill was an active member of VFW Post #8469, a member of the Burke Historical Society, and an engaging speaker on his remarkable experiences.
